Online Chess Game Instructions

If you're new to the game of chess and looking for a place to hone your skills, our online chess game is a great place to start. Internet chess isn't quite the same as home play, so we recommend a quick read of these online chess game instructions before you take on the CPU.

Getting started

The default setting of our online chess game is for CPU to play the black side. If you want to play white, simply make your first move and the game will begin. If you would rather play the black side, first uncheck the CPU Black box, then check the CPU White box. Checking the CPU White box before unchecking the CPU Black box will result in the CPU playing a game against itself. To play against a friend, just uncheck the CPU Black box.

The other default setting of our online chess game is for pawns to be promoted to queens if they reach the other end of the board. Before the game starts, you can change this setting to knight, bishop, or rook.

Moving pieces

To move your online chess pieces, click once on the piece you wish to move. After a few seconds, that piece or its square will light up. After the piece is lit, check on the destination square to complete your move. Moves cannot be taken back, so proceed with caution. If you change your mind before completing a move and wish to move another piece, click once on the lit piece and after a few seconds it will return to its standard white or black color.

The en passant rule for pawns is in effect for our online chess game. Castling is also allowed. To castle, click on the king piece and then click the square where the king would be after a castling move has been completed. And just to avoid any confusion, the queen is the five-pointed crown piece, and the king is the heart-shaped crown topped by a small cross.

Strategy

Experienced chess players will have a fairly easy time beating our online chess game. But if you're a beginner, our game will help you get familiar with basic chess moves and strategies. The CPU plays conservatively, yet it's also willing to sacrifice pieces in order to capture yours. Keep an eye on pieces you want to protect. The CPU likes to hold its queen in place and establish covering positions. Learning how to create strong attacking formations will help you defeat the CPU. Have fun!
